Preparation

During your Labiaplasty consultation, Dr. Arslanian will provide you with specific preoperative directions. These may include stopping blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin. You may also be instructed to stop smoking as smoking may hinder the safety and success of the surgery. About 12 hours prior to your surgery time, you may need to fast – not eating or drinking during that time.

If there are any instructions that may be specific to your case, Dr. Arslanian will discuss them with you during your pre-operative appointment.

You will also need to pick up any medications Dr. Arslanian prescribes before attending surgery. Lastly, you will need to appoint a trusted adult to drive you home after surgery and stay with you for at least 24 hours following your operation. This is to ensure your safety and to aid in the recovery process.

Labiaplasty Procedure

Labiaplasty is a highly customized surgical procedure. Before you are taken in for surgery, Dr. Arslanian will meet with you to review the treatment plan. He will, again, ensure you are comfortable with your decision. From there, you will be taken to the operating room where you will be given anesthesia to make sure you remain physically comfortable during the procedure.

Dr. Arslanian will follow your tailored treatment plan to remove the excess labial tissue.

He will then close the incision sites strategically, giving your labia a symmetrical and neat appearance. Depending on your labiaplasty goals and personal anatomy, Dr. Arslanian may use one of several or a combination of surgical approaches to meet your needs.

Trim Method

The Trim Method (also called an edge excision) is the most common approach to Labiaplasty. During this direct and straight-forward approach, the elongated or asymmetrical labia tissue is cut away. The labia minora is usually trimmed in alignment with, or slightly receded from, the labia majora. The incisions are then closed using sutures.1, 2

Wedge Method

The Wedge Method is more involved than the Trim Method, in that, the Wedge Method removes a pie-shaped piece from the excess labial tissue. This triangular incision is then sutured together, leaving the natural edges of the labia, intact.2

Clitoral Hood Reduction

Clitoral Hood Reduction may be a part of your labiaplasty treatment plan if there is excess tissue in this area. During a Clitoral Hood Reduction, balance is restored to the anatomy reducing the exaggeration of the clitoral hood. There are a number of techniques Dr. Arslanian can perform to reduce the tissue surrounding the clitoris.3

Dr. Arslanian’s labiaplasty approach will be based on your unique anatomy. He will utilize his impeccable skill and attention to detail in order to provide you with fantastic results! Contact Arslanian Plastic Surgery today to schedule a labiaplasty consultation!

Recovery

Immediately following labiaplasty, you can expect your labia to be swollen and tender. You will experience some discomfort that will begin to subside within the next week. You may use an ice pack to reduce any swelling and pain. You may return to wearing tampons and having intercourse 4 weeks post-op. Most swelling and discomfort may mitigate at around 6 weeks post-operatively, however, residual swelling may remain for up to six months.

Results

Labiaplasty is a long-term solution to low hanging labia. Because the excess tissue is excised, you can feel confident knowing the tugging, pulling, irritation, or self-consciousness may be gone for good. Your labiaplasty can give you the comfort you have been seeking by shortening the labia.

Should I wait until after childbirth to undergo Labiaplasty?

You do not need to wait until after you have children to opt for Labiaplasty. Many women choose to do it before having children. Subsequent childbirth should not affect the look of the Labiaplasty. Any residual swelling should be completely resolved by postoperative month 6.
