Turn Back The Clock

What is a facelift?

A Facelift, or Rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic surgery that improves visible signs of aging in the face and neck. The loss of youthful contours in the face and neck can be due to a variety of factors, including thinning of the skin, loss of facial fat, gravity, sun damage, smoking, as well as heredity, and stress. As a restorative surgery, a facelift does not change your fundamental appearance and cannot stop the aging process, but it can drastically improve the tightness of your skin.

Facelifts are often combined with neck lifts to improve the appearance of a “turkey neck”, and achieve a rejuvenated appearance.

The Mini-Facelift is a procedure that has become increasingly popular in recent years. This procedure addresses skin-related issues such as sagging and wrinkles, as with a regular Facelift.

This procedure smoothens the skin on the face and neck and improves its texture. As the name of the procedure suggests, a mini facelift is a modified version of a traditional full facelift the procedure performed

This procedure requires fewer incisions of the underlying tissue, so it can be performed under local anesthesia. As a result, it may be less invasive and cause less scarring and quicker patient recovery. With a mini-facelift, results may not last as long as a traditional Facelift, requiring more maintenance appointments.

Deep Plane Facelift

A Deep Plane Facelift is a surgical procedure that fixes the deep folds and sagging skin by releasing the four ligaments that connect or tether the deep plane layer of your facial anatomy, which then enables tension-free movement and avoids creating tightness, or that “pulled” or “stretched” look you may associate with traditional facelifts. The name of the procedure comes from the “deep plane” or the term used to describe the anatomic plane that exists between the superficial muscular aponeurotic system or the Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System or SMAS-platysma complex (the muscle and fascia of your face) and the deeper layer of muscles that allow you to smile and make other facial expressions.

Facelift with ProfoundRF

The Profound RF Device by Syneron-Candela is an FDA-approved technology that uses radiofrequency waves to treat both dermal and adipose tissue. The device sends radiofrequency waves deep down into the dermis to restructure the skin layers, resulting in a reduction of wrinkles and irregular surfaces. One of the main benefits of a Profound RF treatment is its ability to tighten the skin.

Often referred to as a non-surgical facelift, the treatment will work to stimulate the production of elastin, collagen, and hyaluronic acid. These are three critical elements in having healthy skin. Profound RF is one of the first devices to improve all three elements in the skin. These proteins and acids are crucial. Considered one of the best non-surgical facelifts that works for reducing jowls, a single treatment of Profound RF will transform your face and help you obtain a young glow.

Who are the best candidates for a Facelift?

Facelift surgery is a highly individualized procedure. You should do it for yourself, not to fulfill someone else’s desires or to try to fit any sort of ideal image. In general, good candidates for a Facelift in Atlanta include:

  • Healthy individuals who do not have medical conditions that impair healing
  • Nonsmokers
  • Individuals with a positive outlook and realistic expectations

Call us today for a consultation to find out whether you are a good candidate for a Facelift.

What are the benefits of a Facelift?

Facelift procedures in Atlanta can address the following related changes in facial aging:

  • Excess skin at the lower jawline
  • Deep skin folds from the sides of the nose to the corner of the mouth
  • Relaxation of the skin of the face causes sagging, drooping skin
  • Fat that has fallen or has disappeared
  • Jowls developing in the cheeks and jaw
  • Loose skin and excess fat that can appear as a double chin

It is important to note that a facelift isn’t a treatment for fine wrinkles, sun damage, creases around the nose and upper lip, or uneven skin color.

First Steps

What’s the first step?

The first step on the road to a Facelift in Atlanta is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Arslanian. During your Facelift consultation, Dr. Arslanian will discuss your aesthetic goals, review your medical history, and evaluate your unique facial anatomy, structure, and issues. This helps determine the best surgical approach for your unique needs. You’ll also have the opportunity to ask questions about the procedure and recovery.

Before the day of your surgery, Dr. Arslanian may ask you to fast for a certain amount of time or avoid certain medications such as blood thinners.

What to expect on the day of Facelift surgery

When you arrive at our clinic for your Atlanta Facelift, Dr. Arslanian and his team will prep you for surgery and walk you through the procedure as discussed in your consultation.

The first step is to administer a type of anesthesia, which is administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. The choices include intravenous sedation and general anesthesia. Dr. Arslanian will recommend the best choice for you.

Next, he will make the incision. The type of incision will depend on whether you are opting for a traditional facelift, a mini facelift, or a deep plane facelift.

  • A traditional Facelift incision starts at your temples in the hairline. It continues down and around the front of the ears. It ends behind the ears in the lower scalp. An incision might be made under the chin to improve the appearance of your neck.
  • A Mini-Facelift procedure incision site itself typically begins in front of the ear, where it follows the natural skin crease separating the cartilage part of the upper ear from the facial skin. The incision then follows the curvature of the ear, behind the tragus which is situated just in front of the ear canal. The incision then follows the natural crease around the earlobe and in the crease behind the ear.
  • For a Deep Plane Facelift, the incisions are made in the hairline and around the ear. These will be carefully made to ensure scarring is kept to a minimum. Dr. Arslanian will use these incisions to tighten and secure the layer of connective tissue and underlying muscles beneath the skin. He will release ligaments at a deeper level to lift and rejuvenate the skin and reposition the layer of muscle and tissues.
  • For a Profound RF Facelift, Dr. Arslanian will either apply the Profound dermal cartridge or the Profound SubQ Cartridge. These cartridges deliver the same levels of RF energy but differ in needle amounts for varying coverage. The dermal cartridge has five needles and the SubQ cartridge has seven needles. Both the Profound Dermal Cartridge and the Profound SubQ Cartridge contain slim needles that act as electrodes. When applied, these needles will deliver radiofrequency waves that will send heat deep into the dermis layer of the skin. Micro-lesions will be created that help to boost the health of your skin and smooth out the surface. The Profound Dermal Cartridge will cover less space than the Profound SubQ Cartridge because of the difference in needle amounts. A treatment cream will be applied to your face after the Profound RF procedure is complete. This cream will calm down your skin and hydrate it.

Once the type of incision has been made, any excess fatty tissue is removed and your facial skin is re-draped over the newly repositioned contours of the face.

Finally, the incisons will be closed with sutures that may dissolve or may need to be removed after a few days. Some plastic surgeons also use skin glues to seal the incisions. Once healed, the incision lines from a facelift are well concealed within the hairline and in the natural contours of the face and ear.

A face-lift generally takes 3 to 6 hours. But it might take longer if other cosmetic procedures are done at the same time.

Facelift recovery?

Within 24 hours of your first incision, you will begin the healing process at home. Dr. Arslanian will prescribe pain medicine to help you through the first week. During your first week of recovery, you will likely be swollen and have some bruising.

Patience is the most important prescription. Your results can continue to improve over the course of the year.

You can come in to have any sutures removed in one week. You will keep your head elevated and iced to minimize swelling. After a fortnight of taking it easy, you should be able to go out in public and start wearing makeup again. However, swelling can take a good four to six weeks to resolve. Even then, it can take up to six months for all the swelling to resolve and for scar tissue to soften
