About Botox

botox

Botox is an injectable that helps relax muscles throughout the body and treats many conditions like: migraines, excessive sweating, bladder problems, contractures, lazy eye, and more! The most common indication, however, is to resolve fine lines and wrinkles of the face. Botox has been FDA approved for cosmetic use since 2002.

Botox helps to relax the facial muscles so wrinkles can soften and diminish. The active ingredient in Botox is highly purified botulinum toxin type A. This neurotoxin freezes communication between nerves and muscles by blocking nerve signals. As a result, the muscles no longer contract as intensely . Many wrinkles on the face form as a result of repeated muscle contractions – notably forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet.

Furthermore, we are finding out that treating patients at a younger age can actually prevent these wrinkles from forming in the first place. Today, more than ever, it is becoming truly possible to defy age with Botox.

Benefits of Botox

  • Nonsurgical
  • No downtime or recovery required
  • Safe, FDA approved
  • Enjoy results in as little as 48 hours
  • Prevents wrinkles from forming or worsening
  • Look younger, less tired, and less angry

Botox is not guaranteed to improve one’s confidence. However, many patients report that following Botox injections they felt more self assured and ready to take on what they didn’t think possible.

Candidates

Botox is traditionally considered a treatment for women in their 30s and above. However, that myth is quickly becoming dispelled. Not only are patients in their 20s coming in for Botox treatments in order to prevent the future formation of wrinkles, but Botox has been growing in popularity with men as well. More and more men are discovering that this anti-aging treatment can give them a leg up in life – whether it be dating, their career, or otherwise.

Botox is a very versatile treatment, which means that many people may benefit from its uses. Patients concerned with the appearance of lines or wrinkles on their face may be good candidates for Botox. However, it may also be a good treatment for patients experiencing banding on their neck, hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), intractable migraines, overactive bladder, or blepharospasm.

The safety of Botox injections in women who are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breast-feeding has not been established. Dr. Arslanian can give you guidance on whether Botox injections are safe in your specific circumstance. Please also inform Dr. Arslanian of any muscle or nerve conditions.

What Areas Can Be Treated?

This is a great question. There are DOZENS of locations Botox can be injected. The FDA trials determined Botox to be a safe and effective treatment for forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet. However, expert injectors have found dozens of other locations to treat that are perfectly safe and equally effective. Dr. Arslanian is a Master Injector and performs all injections himself. He creates an individualized treatment plan to match each patient’s needs. Here are just a few of the alternative uses of Botox where Dr. Arslanian has found success.

Brow Lift

When injected properly, Botox can give patients the appearance of a temporary brow lift. This is appealing to patients who only have slight ptosis of the brows or do not want to undergo an invasive surgery, such as a brow lift. Dr. Arslanian can help patients maintain their results by scheduling routine appointments.

Gummy Smile

A gummy smile is characterized by an excessive appearance of the gums when a patient smiles. Botox can help correct a gummy smile by relaxing the upper lip muscle, so it won’t contract as much. It is an easy fix for what some considered a lifelong problem.

Neck Banding

Vertical bands running up and down the neck occur as a result of the frequent contraction of the platysma muscle, a broad sheet of muscles extending up the side of the neck. By relaxing this muscle with Botox, the appearance of vertical bands can be diminished or corrected.

Excessive Sweating

Botox has been used successfully to treat hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating. It can be injected into the armpits, hands, chest, and head to stop overactive sweat glands. Botox has been proven to minimize severe sweating for over six months.

Botox vs Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers and Botox are often used in combination to address complex signs of aging.

While there are numerous different cosmetic and medical uses for Botox, some signs of facial aging are best corrected with dermal fillers. Dermal fillers are soft tissue fillers designed to add volume underneath the skin, decreasing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and sunken features.

Hyaluronic acid fillers, Dr. Arslanian’s fillers of choice, are primarily used to correct the appearance of nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and vertical lip lines. They can also be used to add volume to sunken cheeks, hollowed out areas around the eyes, and thin lips.

Dr. Arslanian will work with the patient to determine the best approach in order to achieve their desired results.

Botox vs Jeuveau

Jeuveau’s impressive results have earned it a nickname: the #Newtox

Jeuveau by Evolus is taking the cosmetic world by storm! Like Botox, Jeuveau is a wrinkle-fighting injectable that targets dynamic wrinkles at their source. Jeuveau is a neuromodulator that has the same main ingredient as Botox, Botulinum Toxin A, but in a different formulation. Due to differences in body chemistry, some people see better, longer-lasting results with Jeuveau over Botox. Jeuveau is also available for a lower price than Botox, making it an ideal option for busy men and women seeking convenient skin rejuvenation, on their terms.

If you have frown lines, crow’s feet, and smoker’s lines, you may be an excellent candidate for Jeuveau!

Alternative Procedures

Many patients can benefit from the remarkable capabilities of Botox. However, some patients may want a more durable procedure. These procedures will require more significant downtime but will have the benefit of providing long-lasting results.

Brow Lift

browlift atlanta

While Botox can provide the appearance of a temporary brow lift, patients will have to return for routine injections 2-4 times a year in order to maintain these results. Furthermore, it may not be a good option for patients experiencing moderate to severe ptosis of the brow. A brow lift will provide the patient with long-lasting results that they can enjoy for years to come.

Dr. Arslanian performs three different types of brow lifts to suit each individual patient’s needs. In general, patients should expect to take about 1-2 weeks off from work in order to allow themselves to recover.

Facelift / Neck Lift

Patients with severely drooping skin or excess skin on their face may benefit more from a facelift and/or neck lift. Botox can fix the appearance of dynamic wrinkles caused by muscle movement, but it is not optimal for treating static wrinkles that form as a result of loose skin. Patients with moderate to severe signs of aging could benefit from a facelift and neck lift that can take ten years or more off of the appearance. In general, patients should expect to take about a week and a half to two weeks to recover.

Consultation

The initial consultation will take place at our Atlanta or Jonesboro location with Dr. Arslanian. He will need to know if you have had Botox before and if so, how often were the treatments, what areas were treated, how many units were used, and how did you like the outcome. He will also ask you about your medical history and any other cosmetic procedures you’ve had in the past. He will then perform a facial analysis and provide his opinion as to what areas could benefit from treatment and how many units he would recommend.

Procedure

Botox injections are actually quite quick, easy, and nearly painless. The procedure can be done in less than 5 minutes and the needles are extremely small and thin. Dr. Arslanian asks EVERY patient how painful the procedure was on a scale of 1 to 10. Ninety-eight percent of patients report the procedure as a 1 or 2 and never more than a 3. If the patient prefers, we can numb the area with ice prior to injection.

Dr. Arslanian prides himself on taking extensive before and after pictures, and keeping detailed injection records. This is all in an effort to make sure that every Botox injection session is better, more efficient, and more accurate than the last.

Recovery

botox-results-1

After the injections patients will typically have several small little red spots from the injection sites. These will usually be gone prior to leaving the office. Patients can resume their normal daily activities and even return to work.

We ask that patients don’t work out, rub their face, take a nap, or wear anything across their forehead for the rest of the day. They should also avoid direct sunlight as much as possible. The following day patients can go back to all their usual activities.

Results

Botox will typically take about 48 hours to notice any effect. Full onset will usually take 7-10 days. The first month Botox will be at its greatest strength and then it will slowly wear off over the next several months. Most patients will require another treatment in three months after the injections have completely worn off. Dr. Arslanian typically likes to see patients back in 2-3 weeks to assess the outcome, ensure there are no complications, and determine if any touch ups are necessary. The results we achieve with our patients with Botox exceed the quality of treatments with other neuromodulators, like Dysport or Xeomin.

In order to maintain results, patients should plan on coming back into the office for treatment every 3-6 months. Over time, patients may require less product in order to achieve the same results. Patients are welcome to book their maintenance appointments at the time of their initial treatment.

Price

Botox varies in price based on the amount of injections and the dosage per injection. Patients must come in for a consultation in order for Dr. Arslanian to provide a quote.

Dr. Arslanian welcomes both new and existing patients interested in Botox to come in for a consultation. Contact our offices in Atlanta or Jonesboro to request one today!
