Most women would say having a child is one of the greatest experiences in their life. Unfortunately, many women will also experience the toll that pregnancy, childbirth, and breast feeding can take on their bodies. A Mommy Makeover is a term coined to describe a set of procedures designed to restore a woman’s body back to a semblance of its pre-pregnancy state. The procedure typically involves some component of breast rejuvenation and body contouring.

Good Candidates

mommy makeoverPostpartum mothers are definitely candidates, but so are women who have never had children, but have suffered similar changes to their bodies from age, gravity, and perhaps weight fluctuations. The breasts and abdominal tissues are designed to allow for a women to become pregnant. They have an amazing ability to stretch and grow with the needs of the woman during this most amazing period of her life. Unfortunately, that tissue will often not return to its pre-pregnancy state. Any woman who has developed loss of volume to the breasts, sagging, lower nipple position, weakening of the abdominal muscles, or extra skin and fat in the lower abdomen is likely a potential candidate for this procedure. Patients should be in good health without major medical problems and currently not smoking or pregnant.

What procedures will I require?

This question is difficult to answer without an in-person consultation and examination. The three areas typically addressed are:

The “classic” mommy makeover usually entrails a breast augmentation as well as a lift to the breasts. The breasts typically lose volume and become somewhat deflated, and the skin stretches and begins to sag. There is a huge spectrum though and some patients may only require an augmentation or only a lift depending on their individual circumstances. You can read, in detail, about all the breast procedures Dr. Arslanian performs in the Breast Section under his procedures he performs.

Typically pregnancy and weight changes will cause loose skin below the belly button, stretch marks, a weakened abdominal musculature, and that stubborn fat around the lower midsection that you just cant get rid of. Liposuction alone will typically not treat these problems in postpartum women, and so a tummy tuck is the procedure of choice. You can read about the different types of tummy tucks in Dr. Arslanian’s Body Section.

While liposuction typically will not treat the front of the abdomen, it can be very useful in treating areas like the flanks, lower and upper back rolls, the hips, the thighs and the arms. These areas tend to respond well to liposuction and the skin tends to contract nicely after the procedure. Many women have trouble getting rid of stubborn fat in those areas as well and this can be a nice treatment option in order to create a total body transformation.

During your consultation, you will meet with Dr. Arslanian and his staff and have the opportunity to discuss your individual situation as well as your concerns and aesthetic goals. Dr. Arslanian will will take detailed measurements of your breast and body and perform a complete examination. Photos will be taken to help Dr. Arslanian point out certain things and explain his approach to Mommy Makeover. If you are deemed a good candidate, he will discuss the various options and make sure you are happy with your decision. He will also show you photos of other patients before and afters to help determine what size and look you are trying to achieve. After answering all your questions, you will then sit down with the surgical coordinator to discuss timing, pricing, and any other questions you might have.

Prior to surgery you will be given instructions on the day, time and location of your procedure. You will be given your prescriptions that Dr. Arslanian prescribes, and all of your paperwork including consent forms will be signed. In some cases you may need to obtain medical clearance from your physician or specialist, and possibly meet with the anesthesiologist and undergo additional lab work depending on your medical issues and personal situation.

mommy makeoverThe procedure will be performed as an outpatient in an accredited surgery center with a board certified anesthesiologist in the safest conditions possible. The surgery will be performed under general anesthesia. Pre-operative markings will typically be made the morning of surgery. Depending on the extent and length of your procedure, there are instances where it may be recommended that you stay overnight in the hospital or surgical center.

After you are asleep, Dr. Arslanian will start by making his incisions. Depending on your individual treatment plan, the procedure may start on your breast, abdomen or areas of liposuction. Dr. Arslanian will then perform the necessary procedures, which you can read about in detail invidiually on our website, prior to closing the incisions and placing you into appropriate garments. You will then be transferred to the recovery room after being awakened from anesthesia.

You will typically go home that same day unless Dr. Arslanian had concerns about the length of the procedure and wants to keep you overnight. Your recovery will very according to the number and type of procedures you have done and your individual treatment plan. Recovery can take anywhere from 2-6 weeks depending on the extent of surgery.

Your results will typically take 3-6 months to achieve, with time required for the incisions and scars to fade, the swelling to go down, and the bruising to improve. Results will vary depending on the actual treatment plan selected for you.

The Mommy Makeover is perhaps the most customized procedure available to our patients. For this reason, it is incredibly difficult to offer a price estimate without a consultation. After Dr. Arslanian has had the opportunity to examine the patient’s body and work with them to determine the best combination of procedures to achieve the patient’s goals, then Dr. Arslanian will be able to provide the patient with an accurate price estimate.
