What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast Augmentation in Atlanta is a surgical procedure that involves inserting either saline or silicone implants to enhance the overall size and shape of the chest. Breast Augmentation can restore your ideal shape after the impact of pregnancy, breastfeeding, or major weight loss. A surgical incision is made on the breast and a pocket of space allows the implant to be placed. Depending on your aesthetic goals and what kind of augmentation you are getting, the implant can be placed either on top of or below the muscle.

Breast Augmentation essentially “fills up” the empty container but does not change the shape of the container. Composite Breast Augmentation

Composite breast augmentation is a combination procedure that helps you achieve natural-looking results. This is accomplished by performing breast augmentation with breast implants to provide the desired volume to the breasts. As the lack of breast tissue may hinder an aesthetically pleasing result, liposuction is performed on areas of the body with excess fat deposits. This fat will be purified and injected into the breast pocket to help smooth the look and feel of the breasts.

Endoscopic Breast Augmentation

Dr. Arslanian is one of the ONLY surgeons in Atlanta performing the “No Breast Scar” Augmentation technique. In this technique, Dr. Arslanian can place your breast implants through a small scar hidden in the armpit, or axilla. This specialized technique requires special video and endoscopic equipment and requires training that many plastic surgeons do not want to bother with. The obvious advantage is a breast augmentation with the same results but with NO SCAR ON THE BREAST. Even though scars tend to heal well on the breast, they are often the telltale sign of an augmented breast. Most women in the Atlanta area are looking for a sexier but still natural look. The only way to achieve a natural look is to move the scar off the breast.

Keller Funnel

The Keller Funnel is a device designed by surgeons for surgeons. In simple terms, it is similar to a pastry bag, and what it accomplishes is what you might say is the “Frosting on The Cake” for breast augmentation. The Keller Funnel is a form of polymeric film with a hydrophilic coating that allows a surgeon to place a silicone breast implant through a small incision into the breast pocket effortlessly. This technique is quicker than other forms of augmentation, reduces the impact of trauma on the body during the surgery, and can be completed using smaller incisions. 

No Touch Technique

The No Touch Technique is something that separates the average hurried surgeon, from the detailed oriented surgeon who has your safety in mind. The Keller funnel is one of the major components of the no-touch technique. It allows the implant to be placed into the pocket with no trauma and no possibility of skin, glove, or instrument contamination. There is literature to support the role of both Antibiotic Irrigation and Betadine irrigation in preventing both implant infections and capsular contracture. Dr. Arslanian utilizes both of these throughout the procedure to ensure that the implant is completely sterile with minimal chance of contamination. 

Studies have shown that even after sterilizing the skin before surgery, the nipple-areola continues to produce bacteria during surgery. This bacteria could potentially be picked up by the implant. To prevent that, Dr. Arslanian places occlusive “nipple shields” during the surgery so there is no chance that the implant could be contaminated by the nipple complex.

An often overlooked component, meticulous technique and prevention of ANY bleeding during surgery can have an impact on results. Blood is believed to have inflammatory factors in it which may contribute to the process of Capsular Contracture. In addition, blood is a medium for bacterial infection and makes it more likely that few random bacteria can multiply into a full blow infection. Dr. Arslanian believes in meticulous dissection to prevent ANY blood loss that can contribute to these problems.

Now that you know a little about what Breast Augmentation involves, the first step to getting surgery is to book a consultation with Dr. Arslanian. In this session, you will learn about the surgery, specific techniques used, and the type of results previous patients have seen at our practice. You will share your thoughts, goals, and any concerns you might have so that Dr. Arslanian can take this into account when creating a plan for you. Dr. Arslanian will take detailed measurements of your breasts and body and perform a complete examination. 

Photos will be taken to help Dr. Arslanian point out certain things and explain his approach to breast augmentation. If you are deemed a good candidate, he will discuss the various options for breast augmentation and make sure you are happy with your decision. After answering all your questions, you will then sit down with the surgical coordinator to discuss timing, pricing, and any other questions you might have.

 

What to expect on the day of Breast Augmentation surgery

The process of getting Breast Augmentation begins before the day of your surgery. You will be given a set of pre-operative instructions to prep your body for the procedure, which can include fasting, avoiding alcohol and other medications as specified by our team

Once you arrive at our clinic in Atlanta, our care team will make you comfortable and prep you for surgery. Dr. Arslanian will go over the techniques and incisions you both discussed, according to the plan he has prepared for you. 

First, you will be administered a type of anesthesia to keep you comfortable and reduce the possibility of feeling any pain.

Once you are comfortably numb, Dr. Arslanian will make the incisions. These will vary from patient to patient, based on the type of breast implant, specifics of your enhancement, and the existing shape and size of your breasts.

From there, the implant will be placed in a pocket of space opened up by the incision, either under the pectoral muscle or between the pectoral muscle and breast tissue, using a “NO TOUCH” Technique and a Keller Funnel. This helps to prevent implant contamination and allows for the smallest scar possible. Once the implants are properly positioned, the incisions are closed with sutures, dressings are applied and you will be awakened from anesthesia. You will be taken into a recovery area where Dr. Arslanian and his team will give you all the information you need for your recovery period when you return home. 

We advise Breast Augmentation patients to arrange for transport to and from our clinic, as this is a major surgery and you will need to rest.

Breast Augmentation recovery

You will go home the same day of surgery and rest. Over the course of the first week, you will begin a range of motion exercises to keep your arms and shoulders from tightening up. Dr. Arslanian will also go over breast implant massage to help prevent early capsular contracture. You will follow up within the first week at which point dressings will be removed and any sutures that were placed on the skin. You will be given instructions on wearing your garment and increasing activity. 

Most people can be back to work within 3-7 days depending on if they work at a desk or have a more labor-intensive occupation. By 2 weeks most patients are almost back to normal. You will then be able to start increasing activity, exercising, and start lifting heavier weights. We do not allow any heavy lifting, bench press, or pushups until AT LEAST 6 WEEKS, to allow the muscle to fully heal. There will be some expected post-operative pain that typically resolves within a few days to a week, which you will be given pain medication for.
